Trail Mix Devo

Episode 1

Here are some questions for you to think about:

What does it mean to “make an idol” out of something?

What is the most important thing in your life?

What takes most of your time, effort, and thought?

What does it mean that God is holy?

Here’s how you can pray:
Dear God, I thank you for who you are. I thank you that you are big, powerful, and holy; that there is no one else like you. I want you to be the most important person in my life. I want to love, serve, and worship you over everyone and everything else. Jesus, please help me to give you the number one spot in my heart each and every day. Amen.

Episode 2

Here are some questions for you to think about:

What are some untrue things you have heard people say about God?

How do we know what is true about God and what isn’t?

Have you ever used God as an excuse to do something that wasn’t what God would want? When?

Why is it a problem to use God’s name when we aren’t talking about him?

Here’s how you can pray:
Dear Jesus, I thank You for who You are. Thank You for showing Yourself to us in Your Word (the Bible) and that we get to know You and tell others about You. Lord, I pray that when I talk about You, others around me would see how big, powerful, and loving You are, and that You are honored and glorified every time I say Your name. Help me to serve You with my words. Amen.

Episode 3

Here are some questions for you to think about:

Have your parents ever told you to do something you didn’t want to do that was for your own good? What?

What time during the week do you set aside to rest and focus on God? If you don’t already do that, what things are getting in the way?

What adults (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.) has God put in your life to guide and care for you? How can you honor them better?

Here’s how you can pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, You are so big, mighty, and holy. You hold the universe in the palm of Your hand, but You also know and care about everything that I need. God, I thank You for the adults You have put in my life to love me, care for me, and guide me. Please help me learn how to step back from all the things that I feel like I “have” to do so that I can focus on You and realize that You are the most important Person and that You are in control. Amen!

Episode 4

Here are some questions for you to think about:

What would it take for us to live up to God’s standard of holiness?

Think of a time that someone made you angry. Did you think or say hateful things about them? How should you have responded?

If Jesus died and rose again for our sins, then why does what we do matter?

Here’s how you can pray:
Dear God, you are holy, sinless, and perfect. I know that your standard for your family is perfection and that I have fallen short and am not perfect. I thank you for sending Jesus to be perfect in my place so that I can be perfect in your eyes through Him. Lord, I pray that you will help my thoughts and actions be more and more like yours, and for my life to look more like Jesus’ life every single day. Amen!

Episode 5

Here are some questions for you to think about:

Why is lying and stealing wrong even if it doesn’t seem to hurt anyone else?

What does it mean that the Bible is our “standard of truth”?

God is a God of truth who keeps His promises. What are some promises He makes to us?

As Christ’s witnesses here on Earth, how do we show truth and honesty in our words AND our actions?

Here’s how you can pray:
Dear God, I thank you that you are the God of truth. I thank you that you show yourself to us in your word and that we can trust everything you tell us in the Bible. Holy Spirit, I pray that you would help me be a person of truth and show Christ to the world around me through honesty in my words and actions. Amen.

Episode 6

Here are some questions for you to think about:

If “covet” just means wanting something, what’s wrong with wanting things?

What is something that you really, really want? How could that desire cause you to sin if you let it grow out of control?

Think back on some of the other commandments. What kinds of out-of-control desires cause us to break those commandments?

Here’s how you can pray:
Dear God, I thank you that you are the God of truth. I thank you that you show yourself to us in your word and that we can trust everything you tell us in the Bible. Holy Spirit, I pray that you would help me be a person of truth and show Christ to the world around me through honesty in my words and actions. Amen.
