Isn’t Hume doing just fine?

Some have asked why we need donations when we “seem to be doing well” financially. It’s an excellent question…

Financially, all the things we have done since the COVID pandemic began have been done in an effort to mitigate the losses as we set our sights on the 2021 summer camp season. Why? Because over 80% of our revenue comes during our summer camp season, and we weren’t able to run summer camp in 2020. This is vital to our survival as a ministry.

So we need to bridge the “COVID chasm” between now and summer 2021, praying that we will be able to do summer camp ministry once again.

We believe God has called us to continue to do everything possible (and seemingly impossible) to continue to tell of His glory to all who come to Hume. Thus, we are compelled to open our doors and share the truth about our precious Savior, Jesus Christ.

Yes! Our hope is to raise $6 million by the end of November. However, if you’d like to make a pledge for a specific amount of time (beyond November), please contact Development Team Member Aubrie Wright.

The funds will be used for operational expenses such as payroll, utilities, operations, infrastructure, maintenance, and any critical project that may arise.

  • We had to close our doors to all camps, retreats, and events in March 2020
  • For the first time in 74 years, Hume has had to cancel all summer youth camps
  • The impact on upcoming seasons—fall 2020, winter 2021, spring 2021, is unknown at this time
  • Total Revenue loss of $19 million

As many of you know, we have had to cancel all ten weeks of our traditional summer camp here at the lake and in San Diego. Those events, paired with the cancellations this spring and the uncertainty of fall, leave Hume Lake Christian Camps with an approximate loss of $19 million in revenue.

Because of that loss we have slashed our budget, enacted a spending freeze and a hiring freeze, we have tapped our reserve accounts, and unfortunately, we were not able to hire over 400 summer staff. Recently, we had to tell dozens of part-time staff that they no longer have work, and had to furlough a number of our full-time staff.

  • We have implemented a spending freeze and travel freeze
  • We applied for and received the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan of $1.98 million
  • We made the extremely painful decision to lay off or furlough 24 full-time staff, and lay off part-time staff without backfilling any open positions
  • We did not hire 425 summer staff workers
  • We canceled Hume San Diego
  • We implemented a hiring freeze
  • We reduced operational budgets by 44%
  • We reallocated Hume Fund dollars
  • We have required remaining full-time staff required to take one-week unpaid leave after summer has ended
  • We have used $1 million in operational reserves

Donor Advised Funds

Did you know that you can now request a gift for Hume Ministries through your Donor Advised Fund (DAF)? The process is quick and easy and can be done right here. There are only three DAFs that are currently set up for online requests like this, but don’t worry, more will be added to the list in the months to come.

As a member of the Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability (ECFA) you can give with confidence, knowing that your gifts go right back into the ministry of reaching kids, youth, adults and families for Christ. That has been the mission of Hume since day one, more than 68 years ago and our commitment to the gospel has never wavered.

Our mission is about as big as the Great Commission, and we depend on our ministry partners in order to continue that work at Hume Lake, Hume New England, Hume San Diego, Hume Hawaii and Hume International. Thank you for your support. It’s wonderful to have you on our team. We cannot do this work without you.
