Summer Staff Frequently Asked Questions
All of them are awesome! Read about each of our three locations here to determine which is the best fit for you!
- At our Hume Lake location, we are seated between two famous California National Parks – Sequoia and Kings Canyon. There is a plethora of nearby hiking trails, camp sites, and breathtaking views. If you have always wanted to serve Jesus while living in a national park, this location might be for you. We hire about 350 summer staffers at the lake location every summer, so expect to work on a large, high-energy team, as we get to serve roughly 2,000 campers and guests on a weekly basis!
- Hume SoCal, our newest location, is located in the hills of Southern California, near the rustic town of Running Springs, situated between breathtaking Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. Hume SoCal is awesome because staff get to experience a small mountain town atmosphere, while also being an hour drive from the Los Angeles area. Our summer staff at Hume SoCal love that we have a smaller staff of about 75, with tight-knit teams, yet we run high energy, iconic Hume activities and programming.
- At Hume New England, our East Coast location, we are nestled in the hills of Monterey, Massachusetts. Monterey is a small, scenic town located in the southern Berkshires of western Massachusetts. Known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and peaceful rural atmosphere, Monterey offers a slower pace of life and a small-town feel. Our summer staff of about 40 become like family, and have a super unique opportunity to build close, personal relationships with campers and staff. It has been so much fun for our team to bring Hume programming to the East Coast!
A typical summer commitment is:
- Hume Lake – (11 weeks) starting the end of May and ending the second week of August
- Hume SoCal – (10 weeks) starting the first week of June and ending the second week of August
- New England – (7 weeks) starting the second week of June and ending the first week of August
Check out the application for more accurate dates for this summer season. Each of our three camp locations has slightly different starting and ending dates, especially if you serve in a leadership role.

- Provide us with three references
References are super important for us to help determine your next best step with Hume. References not only help us determine the best fit for you at Hume, but they also provide valuable insights about you so we can care for you well while you’re with us.
We generally always require three references – a pastoral, personal, and professional reference.
When selecting the best references for Hume employment, it’s important to choose individuals who can speak to your skills, work ethic, and Christian character. The better someone indicates they know you, the more helpful the reference for us.
Here are some of the best types of references we want to hear from most!
- A Pastor or leader at your church who knows you currently
Pastoral references are a requirement for all positions.
Why: They can provide valuable insight into your spiritual maturity
Example: Sr. Pastor, Youth Pastor, Church Administrator, Church Elder, Small Group leader
- Former Supervisor or Manager
Why: They can provide detailed insight into your work performance, responsibilities, and how you contributed to the team.
Example: A previous manager from a part-time job, internship, or volunteer experience who oversaw your work directly.
- Coworker or Colleague
Why: They can speak to your ability to work as part of a team, communication skills, and collaboration on projects.
Example: A colleague you worked with closely on group tasks or during camp activities if you’re applying for a camp counselor position.
- Teacher, Professor, College RA or RD
Why: They can comment on your academic abilities, reliability, and any leadership or initiative you showed in the classroom.
Example: A professor who mentored you during a significant project or a teacher who can speak to your personal growth.
- Coach or Mentor
Why: They can speak to your leadership, teamwork, perseverance, and ability to take direction, especially in a high-energy environment.
Example: A sports coach or mentor who guided you in extracurricular activities or personal development.
Remember, when choosing references, always make sure they are familiar with your work, can speak to your character, and are comfortable providing a positive recommendation.
And sorry, we don’t accept references from any type of family member (because of course they think you’re awesome and perfect in every way!)
Oh and pro-tip, its always a good idea to ask your references if they would be a reference before you give us their contact information – no surprises.
So go pick some winners who will give us an accurate, honest appraisal of who you are so we can get on with our decision about your next best step with Hume!

Year-Round Staff Frequently Asked Questions
Living at Hume year-round means being a part of a tight-knit, adventure loving community that lives together with a shared purpose: to make the gospel known in everything that we do. We have a dynamic range of part-time and full-time positions offered at Hume, and we hire hard-working, Christ-honoring individuals of many different skillsets and backgrounds.
Living year-round onsite looks different at each location, though something we all have in common is sunny summers, and beautiful, snowy winters. If you are passionate about Jesus, tight-knit community, and enjoying outdoor adventure, then you will probably fall in love with life at our three locations. Read more about each site here!
- At our Hume Lake location, we are seated between two famous California National Parks – Sequoia and Kings Canyon. There is a plethora of nearby hiking trails, camp sites, and breathtaking views. We are located about an hour and a half from the city of Fresno, where there is a wide variety of shopping, dining, and medical facilities. Due to the remote nature of this location, a charter school, gas station, health center, volunteer EMTs, fire department, dining services, General Store, and weekly church services are provided for the community.
- Hume SoCal is located in the hills of Southern California, near the town of Running Springs, situated between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. Our year-round staff who live onsite are just a short drive from fun local restaurants, coffee shops, hiking trails, ski resorts, and basic services. For more amenities, we can access the area of San Bernadino in an easy 30–40-minute drive.
Our employees live onsite in staff housing, which is just a fifteen–minute drive from groceries, gas, farm to table restaurants, and coffee shops.
Our full-time staff are provided with their own home or apartment unit appropriate for the size of their family. We do our best to accommodate our staff’s personal needs and provide a unit suitable for them and, if applicable, their families. Due to the remote nature of our three locations, housing deductions are taken from employee paychecks at a very low, affordable rate, with all utilities (internet, water, electricity) included. More specific details about housing will be provided during the interview process.
We love our employees and want to care for them and their families well. Our full-time staff receive a benefits package which includes Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance, as well as Term Life insurance and Long-Term Disability. We also have an awesome 403B plan available for staff after a year of employment. In addition, we offer vacation time, sick pay, and paid holidays. Special discounts are also available for staff at all of our retail outlets and guest lodging for family and friends. Something fun that we do in a spirit of staff appreciation is our annual retreat for all full-time staff and their spouses, where we take our team on a paid trip for fellowship and fun.
Yes! We offer both Seasonal and Part-Time roles in the fall, winter, and spring. These positions are typically less than 30 hours a week, and are provided communal, dorm style housing. Typically, our Seasonal/Part-Time opportunities are offered in Activities, Food Service, and Retail. Check out our job board, as these positions are frequently available due to the seasonal nature of our ministry!
