’Tis the season of celebration and remembering precious memories. For me and many others, Hume Lake holds a special place in those memories. It was my privilege to call Ken and Melba Poure my parents, along with my brothers, David and Mark.
Ken Poure served as Hume’s second director, following Walt Warkentin, from 1978 to 1985. During his tenure, he made a profound impact on countless lives. One of his first encounters with Hume was in 1959 when he was invited to be the high school speaker for several weeks of summer camp. It was here that he discovered his life’s calling — to serve Christ by speaking and guiding high school students into a living relationship with Jesus. Beyond the summers at Hume, he continued his ministry throughout the year and represented Hume, speaking at Family Conferences hosted by churches across California. Sharing Jesus and representing Hume Lake brought him immense joy.
By his side throughout this journey was my mother, Melba — his constant ministry partner, greatest cheerleader, and the love of his life. Married for 66 years, they were a dynamic team, with the sole purpose of doing God’s will together.
As we reflect on this season of joy, I am filled with gratitude for their legacy and the lasting impact of my father’s ministry. The beginning of Acts 13:36 speaks to me of his purpose: “David did God’s will during his lifetime.” This verse beautifully encapsulates my father’s mission — fulfilling God’s will. Many of you will also remember his memorable “Kennyisms,” such as his reminder to “Keep the main thing the main thing” or his uplifting sign-off, “See you here, there, or in the air.”
